Frederick M. Dolan, a professor of rhetoric at the University of California at Berkeley (see his homepage here), is “just a bit puzzled that there is no mention (unless I missed it) of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, the only band, so far as I know, to cover a Frank Zappa song (‘Help I’m a Rock’).” Persuasive rhetoric, professor! Given that the WCPAEB (as the band is known to cognoscenti) is Beefhearty of flavor and has received the full Sundazed reissue treatment, they warrant entry in the next edition. However, they’re hardly the only act ever to cover Zappa. A guitarist named Jon Poole did an entire album of Zappa covers called What’s the Ugliest Part of Your Body? in 1994, at first as a cassette-only goof, but word of mouth led to its being released on CD in 2003. Still, an exquisitely Snobby contribution to the canon, Fred!
