DJ Liquid Todd of New York, New York–real name, Hymie Ephraim Moskowitz*–was the most prominent personage of several Dance Rock Snobs to point out our whopper of an error concerning the Technics SL-1200 Mark 2 turntable, which we describe on pp. 126-127 of the book as the DJ’s best friend by virtue of “the sturdiness of its belt drive.”
“The Technics SL-1200 doesn’t have a belt drive,” Todd informs us. “It has a magnetic, direct-drive system. This is one of the major reasons the Technics 1200 (all models) is so durable and reliable. There are no belts to break or slip and the practically indestructible direct-drive platter on the 1200 allows it to start up very quickly–another feature that club and radio DJs love.” Todd himself can be heard on New York’s WKTU and on Sirius Satellite Radio.
* A joke. His real name is in fact Anthony Todd Wilkinson.
